この曲は Tommy Sands というフォーク・シンガーの曲のカバー。 BBCテレビの Billy Connolly Show というドキュメンタリー番組で 2002年3月4日放送分のベルファストの紛争地域を特集した回の エンド・テロップに流された。 Billy Connolly は同番組で使用する楽曲を自分で選択し、またその 演奏者までも独自に依頼をしているとのことで、ツアー中にこの曲を 歌うよう依頼を受けたカーラは、とあるオフの日、小さなスタジオで そのレコーディングを行った。わずか一日のことだったという。 ところが、この曲が使用された番組が終了すると同時にBBCテレビと カーラの所属するレコード会社に視聴者からの問い合わせの電話が 殺到するなどの大反響が起こった。 それ以来、シングルの発表が長い間待ち望まれていた曲。 美しいメロディーとは対称的に、歌詞の内容のほうは今なお続いている 北アイルランド紛争の犠牲者となった若者達の悲劇を歌ったもの。 この歌の主人公はプロテスタントとカトリックの友人を持っていたが、 宗教の違いなど気にせず楽しい日々を過ごしていた。だがある日のこと、 偶然に巻き込まれた事件が原因でその友人の一人を失う。そしてその 報復としてもう一人の友人までもが犠牲者となってしまった・・。 |
